Our Student's Voice
Student voices will guide you on how to be professional and civil when working with students.
Students are recognised and appreciated:
Help me to make friends
Talk with me - not about me
Tell me what I am good at, and let me know when I did well
Support me to become independent in what I like to do
Offer me opportunities to achieve
Respect me- I have got feeling too
Always expect the highest of me; you might be surprised at what I can do
Let me know what is going to happen next- let me know what I am working for
Don't put me under pressure; rather, help me to achieve what I am struggling with
Let me do what I already can do - even when it takes time
Philosophy is important to us:
Tell me what I should do, NOT what I shouldn't do
Understand me, my needs and respect them
Give me time to process and respond
Only one person is talking/directing me at a time
Keep your promise !!! If you can't follow through, don't temp me in the first place
Food is not a motivator - it's a need
Be calm with me even if I can't be calm myself
Work calmly - give me TIME, SPACE, and FREEDOM to settle down... help me to relax
Working Policy- How we are going to make this work
I am going to follow the timetable; work has to be finished first
Always make sure I have a positive learning outcome
Reward me for my efforts by giving me the freedom to do what I enjoy doing
Give me a chance to make my work independently
Demonstrate - let me experience - do it with me - until I can do it all by myself
Make sure I am ready before you give me a task - look at my "Stage of readiness"
There is no right or wrong in the way I do my work - doing it means progress
Staff - Because I'm a Professional
When I'm working with students - don't step under in unless I ask you for support
Be consistent in your work with the student; they may need the routine to understand
It's your job to support the students in their work, not to do their work for them
Only physically intervene with me when I, a student, or staff is in physical danger
Ask for help or relief before the situation escalates and becomes unmanageable
Stick to your delegated student when it's your responsibility; your student is your priority, stay at your station
Ask an EXPERT for advice (an expert is the person with the most experience in the topic or regarding student)
Think about and plan your actions appropriately; your student may have difficulties doing so
